Safer Schools Through Proven Prevention Programs

Sandy Hook Promise's prevention programs are creating safer schools, homes, and communities.

We have prevented 16 credible planned school shootings and countless acts of violence by applying and advancing comprehensive programs and research on warning signs and youth mental health.

Our Know the Signs programs teach students and educators to recognize the warning signs of potential violence and get help. These programs build a positive school climate where everyone looks out for one another.

By taking a comprehensive, evidence-informed, and sustainable approach to ending school shootings and other forms of violence, we work with schools and youth-serving organizations to:

  • Strengthen relationships between youth and adults.
  • Equip educators with flexible training options, materials, and resources.
  • Empower youth to co-create, lead, and advocate for safer schools by centering youth voices in developing and implementing solutions.

From Bystanders to Upstanders

Say Something (Grades K-12)

The Say Something program teaches youth in grades K-12 to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be in crisis and when and how to get help from Trusted Adults. The evidence-informed Say Something program includes flexible training options, discussion guides, and engaging lesson plans. Cultivate and reinforce a culture of Upstanders through Say Something.

Say Something Anonymous Reporting System

Connect with a Trusted Adult 24/7/365

Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (Grades 6-12)

Integrate the power of the Say Something program’s educational components with the technological capabilities of our anonymous reporting system. With the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (ARS), students become Upstanders who report warning signs and threats to Trusted Adults by text, app, phone, or website. Tips are vetted and triaged by highly-skilled crisis counselors in our accredited, bilingual National Crisis Center. Local school/law enforcement response teams are promptly alerted to life-safety reports to ensure swift intervention in critical safety issues.

SAVE Promise Club

Empower Students to Keep Schools Safe

SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Promise Club

Our SAVE Promise Club network — the largest student-led anti-violence clubs in the U.S. — empowers young leaders of all backgrounds to take an active role in violence prevention. By teaching, modeling, and reinforcing the key messages of our Start with Hello and Say Something programs, youth foster kinder, more inclusive schools and communities. SAVE Promise Clubs can be a stand-alone club or embedded into an existing club or student leadership organization. Each club receives curated resources to plan events, activities, and projects to ensure safe schools.

We provide educators with the tools, curriculum, and resources they need to teach the warning signs of someone who may be in crisis and how to help.
