Sandy Hook Promise Applauds Levi Strauss & Co. for Taking a Stance
to Help End the Epidemic of Gun Violence
Newtown, CT – September 4, 2018 – Today, Sandy Hook Promise applauds Levi Strauss & Co. for its commitment to creating a “Safer Tomorrow” with its latest initiative that demands common-sense gun measures and will provide support to gun violence prevention organizations and youth activists across the country.
“I am proud of companies like Levi Strauss that are finding ways to ensure the safety of all Americans, especially our children. As Chip Bergh stated in his Op-Ed, ‘we can’t insulate ourselves from every threat…[or] harden every place we gather,’ but with initiatives such as this, we can prepare for a Safer Tomorrow,” said Nicole Hockley, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Sandy Hook Promise and mother of Dylan, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
Sandy Hook Promise stands with Levi Strauss, as they have decided that corporate responsibility and the safety of others outweighs the desire to stand in the background and avoid polarizing issues. As Levi Strauss’ CEO and President Chip Bergh mentioned in his Op-Ed, Levi Strauss has “never be afraid to take an unpopular stand to support a greater good.” Our programs at Sandy Hook Promise were designed to bring about this greater good, ending the epidemic of gun violence, and we are proud to have help from Levi Strauss in this effort. Sandy Hook Promise was founded on the belief that social change is possible, and will continue our work to effect that change.
Sandy Hook Promise’s mission strongly aligns with Levi Strauss’ goal of protecting communities across the country. Our proven programs demonstrate how impactful it is for someone to Know the Signs of gun violence to stop violence before it happens. Through our programs we have averted multiple school shooting plots, several teen suicides, as well as other acts of violence.
“I applaud Levi Strauss and its executives for stepping up to the plate to create this new initiative to help curb the epidemic of gun violence in our country. We need common sense measures – such as universal background checks – to create a safer America and I’m happy that Levi Strauss is taking the lead to push for this,” said Mark Barden, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Sandy Hook Promise and the father of Daniel, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
