A decade has passed since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and six educators. The horrific events of December, 14, 2012 catalyzed a national gun violence prevention movement that continues to grow in strength and scope today.

School Violence and Mass School Shootings in the Media
School violence, unfortunately, continues to make headlines. In the wake of the horrific mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and continuous acts of gun violence since May 2022, we are filled with grief and devastation.
Warning signs about these shootings were ignored. Again, more families’ lives were forever shattered. As much as these tragedies brought back their own pain, our co-founders Mark Barden and Nicole Hockley expressed their concerns, urging others to learn the signs, take them seriously, and act immediately.
- In The Guardian, Mark said, “No parent should have to experience this devastation. It’s infuriating. It’s horrific. And strangely enough there’s hope because it’s preventable. That’s what makes it so hard. You’re feeling rage. You’re feeling hurt. Hold onto that. Don’t let it die with the news cycle.”
- In Nicole’s USA Today op-ed, she wrote, “’Our hearts are broken; our spirit is not’. Those are the first words of the Sandy Hook Promise because they convey our pain and also our commitment to turn tragedy into transformation for others. We found our way through the darkness by working together to honor our loved ones with actions to try to prevent gun violence from taking more children from their parents.”
