NEWTOWN, Conn. – The Trump administration released a wide regulatory shift that rolls back several Biden-era gun policy regulations. The 34 proposed and final regulations announced include reviewing or potentially rescinding rules on stabilizing braces and who qualifies as “engaged in the business” of dealing firearms.
The ATF is also encouraging those who had revoked or surrendered federal firearms licensees to reapply under the new standards, following a 2025 executive order directing the U.S. Department of Justice to scale back perceived infringements on Second Amendment rights.
In response, Lauren Levin, chief advocacy officer of the Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund, issued the following statement:
“Every family sending a child to school today deserves to know there is a plan to keep them safe. The Trump administration’s announcement of these policy rollbacks makes it easier for people in crisis, or with intent to harm, to access firearms, and harder to prevent the next tragedy. And it raises a more urgent question: what is the administration’s plan to end school shootings?
“There are practical, bipartisan steps that can help prevent tragedies – including school-based prevention programs, anonymous reporting systems, and stronger background checks – that, taken together, can interrupt warning signs of violence before they become tragedies. The announcement does not move us closer to that goal.
“We’re ready to work with anyone who is serious about building a real plan for prevention. We urge leaders to instead focus on what works to save lives so we can end gun violence in our communities and schools.”
