Sandy Hook Promise Statement on Bulverde, Texas School Shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. – A teacher was shot by a 15-year-old student at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde, Texas today. The teacher has been taken to the hospital, and their condition is currently unknown.

Authorities have announced the 15-year-old student died by suicide at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Information about how the firearm was accessed is currently unknown.

According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, which tracks all shootings at schools nationwide, there have been at least 10 school shooting incidents in Texas in 2026.

In response to today’s shooting, Nicole Hockley, co-founder and CEO of Sandy Hook Promise and mother of Dylan who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, issued the following statement:

“We hope for a swift and full recovery for the teacher that was injured today. When feelings of safety are shattered by an incident like this, the road to healing is a long and complex process. And not just for those directly affected, but also for every student, parent, teacher, and loved ones in the Bulverde community.

“We stand with Bulverde, and we encourage law enforcement to reveal what kind of warning signs may have been a factor in the days and weeks leading up to today. It’s also important to learn how this firearm was accessed by the teen shooter, who was not old enough to legally possess a weapon. When warning signs are taken seriously, and firearms are securely stored to prevent access by unauthorized users, tragedies can be prevented and lives can be saved.”
