NEWTOWN, Conn. – Two people were killed, and 12 others were injured after multiple people began shooting at one another in a crowded downtown area of Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday evening. The deceased victims include a 43-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male.
Authorities have said that half of the 14 total victims were under 20 years old. The youngest was just 16 years old. No arrests have been made thus far, and police have stated that several shooters were involved.
Tragically, firearms are the leading cause of death among young people ages 1-17 in Alabama, based on most recent available finalized data from CDC. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 9 mass shootings in Alabama where four or more people have been injured or killed since the start of 2025.
In response to this attack, Sandy Hook Promise Chief Program Officer Crystal Garrant issued the following statement:
“Senseless acts of violence have no place in our society. We stand with the victims and the community of Montgomery in demanding justice and condemning the actions of those who initiated this shooting. Whatever argument or conflict led to this horrific act, once again we see that our young people are among those that pay the heaviest price.
“Half of the victims in this attack were just teens – young people who deserve to be living carefree lives, safe from harm. Instead, they are forced to endure lasting trauma and the long roads to recovery that forever changes their sense of safety and security.
“We don’t have to accept this reality for our children. We have the power to change this. It starts by recognizing the warning signs of violence and knowing when and how to get help, including the skills needed to peacefully resolve conflicts. Steps like these will protect our kids from gun violence, and will provide them with a safer future.”
