Educators and Trusted Adults

Equipping adults to keep young people safe from violence and self-harm.

Who is a “Trusted Adult”?

A Trusted Adult is:

  • Someone who students view as a reliable, caring, non-judgmental source of support.
  • Someone who will listen carefully and respond appropriately to their expressed concerns, warning signs, and threats of someone who may be at risk of harming themselves or others.
  • A Trusted Adult can be an educator such as a teacher, administrator, librarian or counselor, another school staff member, a community member, or a parent or other relative.

It’s important that students have as many sources of support as possible. Sandy Hook Promise offers a growing collection of training and engagement resources to help adults expand their skills and knowledge to help young people prevent violence, suicide and other threats to their health and safety.
